We got the opportunity to ask Keisha questions about the things that she is passionate about in the beauty world!
What does representation of WOC mean to you?
I don’t understand why we’re ignored. We’re a massive part of the beauty industry. A lot of trends that happen derive from black people. Like in the fashion industry or when it comes to hair, we’re a big part of the industry. So it’s important that we’re represented. Otherwise, people won’t know what we contribute and it won’t seem as important when it really is.
What are your tips on getting bold colors to pop and last all day?
My number one tip would be using an extra light concealer and setting spray on top.
Where do you get your inspiration for your eye looks?
Anywhere! I sometimes see things outside, like colors, flowers. Just anything that I feel I can translate onto my face.
Your top 3 go-to products when you’re in a rush?
Concealer, definitely! Lip gloss, definitely! Brow pencil, definitely! And lip liner.
Do you feel that makeup has become more inclusive of WOC in recent years and how?
It has, WOC have shouted out a bit more and demanded space for us. I definitely think it has become more inclusive. The only thing is, there aren’t a lot of things or campaigns out there that showcase women of color.
I think we need to work a bit more when it comes to that. It doesn’t always have to be like a token black person acting. It should just be welcoming of people of color in general. It shouldn’t be loads of black people and one white person or vice versa.
How would you describe your style?
Bold, quirky, neat, not over the top, precise. I’m really creative, and bold as well. But at the same time not over the top and just me. Just really neat and precise.
What is your favorite makeup palette to use?
I would say the Huda Beauty one because that’s the one I always grab. I don’t actually own any Morphe palettes, but I think if I had Morphe products I’d really like it because of the diverse colors in the palettes. But I think my favorite palette that I have is the Huda Beauty Palette. Huda Beauty Desert Dusk Palette for sure!
Advice for someone that wants to become a makeup artist?
I’d say try and gain as much experience as you can, I’d say practice makes perfect. It might be quite hard, in the beginning, seeing other people’s makeup looks thinking I wish I could achieve that, will I ever achieve that, but everyone starts somewhere. And when I look back at my makeup compared to now its cool. But I’d say keep practicing and I think experiment. Definitely experiment. Experiment, experiment, experiment.
What makeup product are you most excited about at the moment?
Anastasia Beverly Amrezy highlighter, I’m really obsessed with highlighters, I don’t even know how many highlighters I have.
How has your experience in makeup shaped how you define beauty?
I’d say, it has allowed me to become extremely experimental. I’m a creative person in many ways, but I didn’t know how creative you could be with makeup. In my experience, it’s taught me that there’s not really any boundaries when it comes to makeup and you can be as experimental as you want to be. It has also taught me there can be a lot of negativity in the makeup industry from my experience. And like there’s still a long way to go when it comes to indecency with makeup art.
Where do you hope your passion takes you in the future?
I hope to become a fully established IG star, like the ones in America. I’d like to be like someone really big. Patrick Star, Jackie Aina etc… I’d also like to do makeup classes for people. So I’d like to teach and pass on the skills that I have to others. I’d love to get a job in the industry as well. I’m not 100% sure what job that would be, but some work behind the scenes. I would also love to do a campaign at some point with a brand or release a palette or something.
